History brought to life
Historic Environment Scotland required visually rich websites and compelling user experiences across desktop, tablet and mobile devices for Edinburgh Castle and Stirling Castle. The websites also required greater flexibility for content authors, who were restricted by the existing content management system.
Online surveys gathered qualitative information from existing users of the websites. This was paired with quantitative data from Google Analytics to develop a shortlist of tactical enhancements to improve the user experience. We used this research in conjunction with the needs of the organisation, garnered through stakeholders workshops with Historic Environment Scotland’s commercial team and staff. This research culminated in the development of detailed personas of key website users. The information gathered allowed us to mock-up detailed prototypes for discussion and refinement. These, along with existing brand guidelines and stunning photography were used to create a visually rich look and feel to showcase some of Scotland’s most famous attractions.
Innovative features include seamless integration of content pulled from TripAdvisor, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram through their API’s and we created a sophisticated event publishing system – allowing users to browse using an intuitive calendar interface. Approved designs were used to develop fully responsive front-end page templates which were optimised for desktop, tablet and mobile devices. These templates were integrated with the latest version of Umbraco, providing an easy to use authoring environment for the digital team – removing the pre-existing issues with the previous Content Management System.
