Harnessing the power of waves and tidal streams
A bespoke Knowledge Management System (KMS) to house the worlds leading commerical and academic research for wave and tidal energy
Wave Energy Scotland (WES) are a subsidiary of Highlands and Islands Enterprise and own the intellectual property of millions of pounds and millions of brain power invested into commercial, current and future academic efforts in the quest for sustainable renewable energy by harnessing the power of waves and tidal streams. They continue to drive the search for innovative solutions to the technical challenges facing the wave energy sector with the aim of producing reliable technology which will result in cost effective wave energy generation. Through their programmes, they have already awarded £24.6M to 56 projects and worked with 150 separate organisations, across 11 different countries.
Our challenge was to develop a bespoke Knowledge Management System (KMS), with tiered access for private members to key information and documents generated through this world leading commercial and academic research & development and to migrate the existing data from offline sources to a our online data structure.
We created the KMS on the Umbraco Open Source platform to work across all devices. The account based system provides access to varying degrees of information depending on user rights. Users can download academic and commercial reports, presentations from WES events, discover international collaboration opportunities and network with other researchers or businesses interested in the Wave Energy Sector.
The results are in part the system itself, since nothing like this existed before. We delivered the first phase of the system we set out to create, on time and on budget, and now provide access to academic and commercial research, presentations from WES events and our target audience can discover international collaboration opportunities. The next phase is to add further networking capabilities for researchers and businesses interested in the Sector. Since launching on July 20th 2017, the site has received over 500 registered members including international funding agencies and representatives of governments around the world, which exceeded our expectations. Response in the press, through news sites and social media, has been extremely positive.
“The Innovation Digital team were fantastic to work with on our brand new online library – a way to share the high-quality research funded through our wave energy R&D programme. They had endless ideas to turn our needs into a user focused, and easy to use design, while ensuring all of the complex features we needed were built into the back-end of the system and we are looking forward to working with Innovation Digital on the next phases of the project”Elva Bannon – Senior Research Engineer and Project Manager
